Withdrawn February 1908 and sold to Seaton Delaval Coal Co. and later incorporated into Hartley Main Collieries Ltd. in 1929.  The locomotive survived until February 1959!   Circa 1938" /></a>

Built by Manning Wardle in 1881 as No. 813 and bought by Lucas & Aird Ltd., one of thirty, for construction of the Hull & Barnsley Railway. It was then purchased by Dorman Long & Co. in 1928 for use at the Parson Byers Quarry where it worked until 1943 before being scrapped. Circa 1939" /></a>

Originally built for the G. & S.W.R. in 1898 as No. 171 and never renumbered into L.M.S. stock prior to sale in 1926 to The Kirkheaton Colliery Co. Ltd. that closed in 1930.  It was then stored till September 1942 when the Board of Trade ordered its re-instatement for war service in Cambois opencast then Backworth and on to Seaton Delaval from 1949 till withdrawl  in July 1953. Built as a 0-4-0 No. 210 of 1869 at Joicey's of Gateshead, this locomotive worked the moorland section from Bolts Law to Park Head until 1923, then put into store. It was re-instated at Thornley Colliery in 1931, to New Brancepeth in 1953 and finally Brancepeth where it was scrapped in 1955.   June 1953" /></a>

Withdrawn by G.W.R. in December 1934 and sold by Frazer of Hebburn to Hartley Main Collieries in January 1936.  The locomotive survived till September 1956.   Circa 1939" /></a>

The connection awaits to Fintona Town. The horse was always called Dick apparently, but was invariably, a mare. They were cheaper and the bosses never knew, so the fable goes. This scene was a daily occurence till 30th September 1957 when the branch closed and Dick had her last treacle toffee!" /></a>

The North Sunderland Railway came into existence in August 1898.  The branch left the N.E.R. at Chathill for the 4 mile journey to Seahouses and was incorporated into the L.N.E.R. in January 1939 when the N.S.R. ran into financial difficulties. The last train ran on 27th October 1951.  Circa 1950" /></a>

The locomotives ran through esturine Essex to Coryton (formerly Kynochtown) with workers for the remote Kynoch Explosives Works.  Pre WW2" /></a>

The private locomotive of the 4th. Duke of Sutherland who had rights on the H.R. then L.M.S. to run with a single carriage between Inverness and Golspie (loco shed), and on to Dunrobin Castle Halt. During WW1, Dunrobin Castle was used as an auxiliary naval hospital and the engine transported patients.  It was sold to the R.H.& D. Rly. in 1950.   In 1965, the locomotive was purchased by Harold Foster, a businessman from Victoria, BC.  " /></a>

Built in stages between 1901 and 1908, the Railway was never connected to the rail network.  It closed in 1917 after a period when it was requisitioned by the War Office.  The skirts were fitted to protect the public in the streets and later a cow-catcher was added.  Circa 1910" /></a>

Dukedog 9017 is featured in this marvellous picture of a day out in better times.  The locomotive is at the head of the 11AM train to Barmouth.  Possibly the photographers son is the subject of this snapshot. A loco was needed to carry the name "The Essex Regiment" and 2858 was chosen. Later renumbered in 1946 to 1658 then a 6 prefixed in 1948. Newcastle United never re-appeared on any loco. Perhaps this could be rectified if the "New Builds" ever come to fruition! 5th September 1954" /></a>

The locomotive is propelling the irregularly rostered Alnwick to Ilderton parcels after through working on the line was curtailed after the floods of August 1948 and again in 1949 destroyed a couple of bridges between Ilderton and Wooler - effectively creating two branch lines and terminii. Originally it was an Alnmouth locomotive and was dispatched to Hull Botanic Gardens, but never arrived - the loco only got as far as Borough Gardens MPD (Gateshead) and was stored there for a considerable time then sent back to Alnmouth then to Selby in 1955.  It did actually get to Hull (Dairycoats), but only to be stored, yet again.  However, due to a shortage of locomotives in the Summer of 1957, it was reinstated and the authorities deeming it was in need of a lick of paint,  received the second B.R. totem on the tender as a result - one of only two of the Class to do so!  After its season in the sun, it went home to Alnmouth.   19th November 1957" /></a>

It worked off Neville Hill then Haymarket where it was regarded as underpowered and sent back south of the Border and worked off Starbeck.  It had a further lengthy stay in Darlington Works during 1947/48.  It was withdrawn on 3rd November 1952 after a collision at Bilton Junction, that buckled the frames." /></a>

When the order arrived the locomotive had been scrapped, and  amazingly, as not to incur Gresley's wrath, a number of withdrawn C11's were canabalised and rebuilt at Cowlairs, the new  "Midlothian" was then sent to St.Margarets and regulary seen on Edinburgh-Perth, Glasgow and Carlisle turns.  However, at the outbreak of the Second World War it was scrapped.   Mid 1930's" /></a>
